Family
and friends of Pastor Herbert and Mrs. Olive
Fletcher gathered in the Miami area on
September 13 and 14, 2002 to share a
weekend honoring the couple for their
lifelong service to the Seventh-day Adventist
Church. As the weekend progressed, it
became apparent that the Fletchers had and
continue to have a positive influence on
many, many lives.
The
idea for having such an event was the
brainchild of the Goulding brothers, Dr.
Herbert Goulding and Pastor Courtney
Goulding. They, along with Pam
Witter-Scott, were largely responsible for
planning the event.
The
activities began with Vespers on Friday night
at Maranatha SDA Church. Pastor Courtney
Goulding spoke. He emphasized the
importance of showing gratitude to others
while they can still appreciate it. The
Heralds sang for special music.
Sabbath
services continued next morning with Sabbath
School coordinated by the Central and South
Florida Chapters of NCU Alumni
Association. Tony Rugless was the
Superintendent. Tribute was paid to
Pastor and Mrs. Fletcher by singing and
playing their favorite
songs, reading their favorite
Bible texts and showing slides of their
lives.
During
Divine Service, Dr. Herbert Goulding,
Dr.
Carlos Archbold,
Dr .Herbert Thompson, President
of Northern Caribbean University, Dr.
Bertram Melbourne and
others offered their words of
thanks to and respect for the Fletchers.
Musical guests included Rosie Ward and The
Heralds. Dr. Newton Hoilette, the
keynote speaker, challenged the audience to
remember the less fortunate.
Immediately
following the Divine service, lunch was
provided for the honorees and out-of-town
guests.
After
sundown, it was time for the finale, a
banquet. Pastor and Mrs. Fletcher were chauffeured
via limousine from their hotel to the Signature
Grand Catering & Conference Mansion in
Ft. Lauderdale. Once there,
they were escorted to their seats by Pastor
and Mrs. Keith Harding.
Oz
Rugless, Master of Ceremonies, set the stage
for the evening's activities. Alexsis
Fletcher, granddaughter of the Fletchers, had the audience in
stitches with her tribute to her
grandparents. Pastor Israel Leito,
President of the Inter-American Division,
Pastor William Kirlew, Dr. Lennox Westney, and
Rosie Ward all had kind words for the
Fletchers. The Heralds provided musical
entertainment.
Thank
you, Pastor and Mrs. Fletcher, for your
service and the positive influence that you
have had on so many lives.
